Honey Bees and the Importance of Beekeeping

In this program local beekeeper, John Hedly, will explain how to get bees to start a hive. Attendees will learn about the colony and organization of a hive, bee chores in and out of the hive from the day they are born until they die, and the importance of pollination and how bees pollinate about a third of the fruits and vegetables we eat every day. John will assemble a hive during the session and demonstrate the process of collecting honey.

About the presenter:

John Hedly has been a dedicated beekeeper for 16 years, having graduated from the Worcester County Beekeepers Association (WCBA) bee school in 2009. For the past four years, John has taught an Introduction to Beekeeping class at the Assabet After Dark and Bay Path programs, as well as to numerous local libraries, inspiring many attendees to pursue beekeeping and enroll in bee school themselves.

John has mentored to several new beekeepers, currently guiding two individuals in Auburn and one in Charlton. Formerly a librarian for the WCBA, John is a two-term member of the WCBA Board of Directors and has been nominated for Beekeeper of the Year for the past two years by the association.
